Chinese healing music

In the Daoist tradition, sound is much more than an acoustic phenomenon. By its vibratory nature, it can resonate with the body and the different planes of being, becoming a conduit for the transmission of Qi.

The Five Tones (五音) — Jué 角, Zhǐ 徵, Gōng 宮, Shāng 商, and Yǔ 羽 — occupy an essential place in the traditional Chinese conception of therapeutic music. Associated with the Five Phases — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — they connect music, the dynamics of Qi, the Organs, and emotional and psychic life.

We invite you to explore this approach through synchronized listening sessions. From different locations, we will receive the same music together, in a time dedicated to presence, listening, and resonance.

The sessions are free and open to all. No prior knowledge of Daoism, Chinese medicine or the Five Tones is necessary.

Sound as a path
to harmony

Chinese healing music is rooted in the correspondences between the Five Tones, the Five Phases, and the dynamics of Qi. Through resonance, music can accompany inner movements and support the cultivation of harmony across the physical, energetic, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of our being.

Listening
as a practice of presence

Listen without seeking to analyze, interpret, or achieve a particular result. Immerse yourself in the music, receive its vibrations through the body and breath, and observe what they set in motion within you. Allow the experience to unfold through the simplicity of listening.

The resonance
of shared listening

Each week, at the same moment, we gather from different places to receive the same music together. Each person remains within their own inner space while taking part in a shared gathering, where the synchronicity of listening creates a common space of presence and resonance.

The First Season’s Programme :

Listening to Master Wu Shen

A selection of works to gradually discover Chinese healing music and the legacy of Master Wu Shen.

Master Wu Shen

Chinese Healing Music · A Direct Lineage of Transmission

A highly accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Qigong master, and inheritor of a long tradition of Chinese medicine, Master Wu Shen devoted a substantial part of his life’s work to exploring the relationship between music, vibration, Qi, and healing.

A pioneering figure, he helped introduce Chinese healing music to the West during the twentieth century. He developed music-based therapeutic programmes in collaboration with medical universities and hospital departments in the United States, notably to support cancer patients and help alleviate pain.

His work extends ancient understandings of the relationship between music, the body, and Chinese medicine, while giving them a new expression. Music becomes a vehicle for Qi, conveying an energetic and vibrational quality through sound.

His place in our tradition is a special one: Master Wu Shen was the healing music teacher of Li Shifu, abbot of the Five Immortals Temple at Wudang, and our own master.

This season is therefore part of a direct lineage of transmission, from Master Wu Shen to Li Shifu, and then to those who receive this teaching today. It is an intangible spiritual heritage that we are invited to encounter through listening to his works.
